LANGUAGE EXCHANGE PROGRAMME

Guillelme Brown (Ourense) – SG.stevesnveek (Holland)
Last April 33 Dutch students came to our school to participate in an English language  exchange  programme.
This exchange programme was different  in some ways:

First, because the foreign country was Holland.
Second, because, even though they are not British or American, the language that we used with them was English and not Dutch because those boys and girls study 70% of  their school subjects in English.
Third, the idea of the exchange was not only practising English;  it was very important to know another culture, another way of life.

They stayed here in Ourense for 8 days. Those days were very intense; we didn´t stop a second from the moment we woke up in the morning until the time we went to bed; but we really had a very good time.

At the weekend we had time enough to know each other and also to visit some places in Galicia. We wanted to show our Dutch friends our Galician culture and we also wanted to enjoy a good time together so we planned a lot of trips with more exchange students, in groups, not only with our family. So we visited: Allariz, Monterrey Castle, Verín, Vigo, Baiona, the river Sil area, Monasteries, etc.
On Saturday night everybody, Dutch and Spanish students, met in Ourense to watch an important football match together: Real Madrid vs. Barcelona, one of the most important sport events of the year.

After the weekend school started again and our exchange students had to come with us to school. Sometimes they came to our classes and some other times they had some Spanish lessons while we were in class.
We also had to work together with the Dutch students on a  project about Ourense. We had to help them to understand our history and to know our town, Ourense. So we worked in groups of five or six students on different topics,  for example the Celts, Galician artcraft, our language, landmarks in our town, castles, cathedrals,  St James´s way, food , music and some other aspects of our galician culture and history.

We also had some hours in the schedule to play sport leagues.
While we were having lessons at school, some days, the Dutch students had cultural trips: they went to Santiago de Compostela, to the City hall, Castro de San Cibrao de Las, Mosteiro de Oseira, San Tomé, etc.
When we finished school, at 4pm we wanted to show our exchange students the way we live in Ourense and how we enjoy our free time here; so on Monday we went to the shopping centre, Millenium bridge and to “A Chavasqueira“; on Tuesday we went for a walk to Paseo Street, and we also went  bowling; on Wednesday we showed them the historical city (The Burgas, the catedral, the town hall square). There, we bought some souvenirs, and we finally met the group to have dinner all together in a restaurant.
Suddenly Thursday arrived, the following morning they would be taking a plane to go back to the Netherlands. The day started as usual, we first had normal classes and  the Dutch students their Spanish lessons. Then we finished our common project about the city and after lunch time we had Sport games (Spain vs Netherlands).
But in the afternoon we went to Ourense by bus and there, we did a “roteiro”, a route through the old town and there, all the groups explained the part of the project they had been working on all through that week .
Later, at six our parents picked us up and we went home to have a shower and get ready for the goodbye party at school. There we ate a lot a food, we played, talked, danced..... We all had a very good time because by then we were really good friends. So we were sad because they were leaving, but ...........................something happened!:
On Friday morning we took our exchange students to the bus stop and we went to school, but after 3 hours the bus took them back to school again because the flight was cancelled, so they stayed one more day with us.

After this experience I would recomend to everyone an exchange programme, because you really practise English, you know about other countries and cultures, you meet new people and make new friends, and of course you have a great time.

So please try it, i am sure you will like it.
